Addiction…
The dictionary defines addiction as an inability to stop using a substance or engaging in a behaviour even though it is causing psychological and physical harm.
The term addiction does not only refer to dependence on substances such as heroin or cocaine. Some addictions also involve an inability to stop partaking in activities such as gambling, eating, or working. And then there are some people around the world just like me who are addicted to aquariums.
Ah, Aquariums.
Aquariums are the first step into the pet hobby. At the beginning of the present century, aquarists began to keep tropical fishes, and it was perhaps the essential artificially of so doing that started a new wave of successful fish culture. The aquarists were obsessed with copying nature in the tanks. Thus, the aquarium gradually came to be regarded as most of us see it today, as an artefact of a mirror held up in nature.
Some people naturally move up the ladder to a cat or a dog in the latter days, but it all starts with an aquarium. But then many stick to aquariums and are partially or completely addicted. Well, not many are partially addicted but are completely just like me.
So, there are some visible signs to look for in any aquarium hobbyist to confirm if he or she is addicted to aquariums. Any one of the signs is just an indication that the person is completely addicted…
Read on to look out for these signs and find out that crazy aquarium hobbyist friends of yours…

Have a box of partially used cans of food that their fish won't eat but they can't throw them away because someday they will get fish that will eat it.
They can name over ten pet shops that are no longer in business.
People ask them how many fishes have they got and they answer with the number of fish tanks they have.
They think mermaids are way more interesting than real-life women.
When they purchase a torch for after dark viewing, label it as for aquarium equipment and have it sitting beside the aquarium within easy reach.
When their partner accuses them of loving their fish and tank more than them.
They are still capable of spending hours in an aquarium store, looking and dreaming about stock even though they have no more room left in their current set-up.
When the need to visit the toilet during the night arises and they can’t help themselves from having a quick look into the tank to see what is out and about.
When they deny that it is an addiction and prefer to call it a hobby or a great passion!
When most of the photos in their Camera or Mobile are of their fish and tanks.
When their youtube feel is all filled with aquarium videos.
When their Instagram feed is taken over only by people like Oliver Knot, Takashi Amano, Jurijs, George Farmer etc.
They are in the middle of setting up their ‘all-time dream tank’ and already dreaming of how their next tank will be even better...
When they simply decide to not go on holiday because they know that they be fretting about the tank.
Their idea of a vacation is going to look for cool new things for their aquarium at pet stores.

Their daughter can identify more species of fish than most pet store employees.
Their tanks get their room.
When they read these posts and know that they can relate to them.
